pocketwatch robot by Electrosa pocketwatch robot by Electrosa
wow this turned up to be a much bigger project than I was anticipating, and I was ready to spend a while on this!

I've always wanted to draw a detail shot of NOVA without his coat or shirt on, since he's a robot and thus has very interesting anatomy. However, I never actually had a solid grasp on what his bare body even looked like until recently. My dear friend Cascade-Kirby mentioned to me one day that pocketwatches often had rubies in them, and I just had to apply that idea immediately to NOVA. it fit in with headcanon, and he already has a lunking great crystal for a heart, so it worked perfectly (plus I love drawing gems. this picture might illustrate that.).

the basic premise for NOVA's body is that he's a robot, but he's extremely old tech and thus very simple. he's basically a clockwork ball-jointed doll - all of his joints are "ball" joints, owing to every joint being a gem (except his head, that's just kind of... sitting there).

it's a pity we can't see his jets, since I'm sure those would have looked cool too, but I'll do a back view of him eventually.

this was basically an exercise in textures - gems and metal specifically - and I definitely procrastinated on this for a while. I basically have a cheat sheet for gems at this point, but I'm still uncertain on metal, especially metals that aren't polished-chrome levels of shininess (as you can see, I still fell back on that, pretty much). the intended texture for NOVA's skin is brass, and I was aiming for something more muted like brushed brass, but even so I'm incredibly happy with this. I was so worried I'd mess up all the metal.

Galactic NOVA is (c) HAL Labs/Nintendo
design is mine

Paint Tool SAI || Wacom Intuos Medium || Time unknown, but I spent five hours on it today at least

Such a beautiful man............ I love this picture.

I don't think I've ever seen the inside of a pocket watch that doesn't have gems in it, actually! Wikipedia says jewels used as parts of them reduce variance in friction of joints and keep the accuracy of the watch higher. Accurate old clock robot. 83

Oooh, I wondered what the jewels were actually used for. Thanks for letting me know!

NOVA is that clock that only loses one second every like ten thousand years.
